The Rundown: Asami’s history with her lord off the island reveals their dark connection.

In 1868, Asami lives and trains in Aizu to serve as a warrior for Lord Shimazu. As she continues to train, she also defends herself against Shimazu’s overtures for marriage. She continues to refuse his advances respectfully and continue not only her training, but also learbning about the other women who served their country and whose stories are not told.

After rejecting Shimazu again, the castle is attacked and the women warriors suit up to take on the invaders. After many fall to their superior weapons, Asami discovers that they have been betrayed and the betrayer destroys the history they were chronicling. Asami takes her revenge, but the act will force her to go on the run.

The Story: Duggan crafts an entertaining and darkly thrilling story in this issue. I love exploring Asami’s backstory and how her journey informs the character she becomes. There are some dark, intense moments throughout the story and the events have a beautiful poetry to them as they unfold and create both tragedy and triumph for the character.

The Art: Torres delivers stunning art throughout the issue. I love the imagery and how it balances the beautiful and the darkly violent.
